Tip Loop Repair for your BlueSky Furled Leader

A frayed or broken tip loop is not the end of your BlueSky Furled Leader. Whether caused by strain or extensive use, the leader can be quickly and easily repaired.

Just follow the instructions below and your leader will be as good as new.

Method #1 using the nail knot is the preferred method. The nail knot is one of the strongest knots available to the fly fisher. It also has smooth feel and appearance when it is finished.

Steps:

Step 1: Hold nail (or a needle), tip of furled leader and new tip material between thumb and forefinger. Wrap a 10 inch length of extender tip material 6 or 7 turns. Wind carefully for a tight, smooth knot. Place end of tip material between nail and leader.

Step 2: Remove nail. Holding coils carefully between thumb and forefinger, alternately pull both ends of material with free hand to tighten.

Step 3: Snip off excess end of leader. Apply a 2-part epoxy or nail polish to knot .

Step 4. Tie a tiny loop onto the tag end of the new mono extender. This extender should be about 6-8 inches long.

Recommended extender material:

Ultralight leaders - 3X
Light leaders - 2X
Medium leaders - 1X
Heavy leaders - 0X.

Method #2 using the fold-over is an acceptable alternative repair method. It lacks the elegance of the original woven tip loop, or of the Method #1 nail-knotted repair, but it will work fine.

Steps:

1. Gather the strands and "freeze" or secure the ends with adhesive.

2. Fold back the tip to form a loop about 1/4 inch (3 mm) in diameter.

3. Whip finish using tying thread. Trim excess strands and apply a good 2-part epoxy, nail polish or flexible product like Knot Sense to the knot.

4. Add a 6 inch (15 cm) extender, if desired, to protect this new loop.

Recommended extender material:

Ultralight leaders - 3X
Light leaders - 2X
Medium leaders - 1X
Heavy leaders - 0X.
